A Review of
Celebration U.S.A
Celebration, U.S.A.
is a project that details the early days (1997) of
Disney's attempt to build a new town. The town
emerged from the swamps just south of Highway 192
and the Walt Disney World Resort. The result is
a book that can be used as tool to learn more about
why we love small towns and how a community can be
benefit society.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this experiment! I
was intrigued that the authors would actually pack
up and move to Celebration, FL just to write a
book about the entire experience.
The most interesting aspects of this non-fiction
work are the way the authors describe the many
"characters" they encountered. The husband and
wife authors created a pioneering feeling even in
me as I experienced the early years of the town of
Celebration with them. I found myself turning each
page simply to find out more about all the people
that gave up their stable lives and homes to begin
a journey to do something bold and daring that
impacted entire families.
Unfortunately I found that the book quickly bogged
down with details about the public school in the
town. I know this topic is important to most
people, but I was more interested in learning
about the people, their sacrifices, reasoning, and
their interactions with each other and with the
Walt Disney Company.
If you are interested in learning more about the
recent growth of new urbanism or the psychology
behind a community, this is a great summer read.
